With a combined population of around 2.7 bn people, China and India represent roughly a third of the world’s population and almost 20 % of the world’s GDP. Both countries have had an extraordinary growth journey over the last decades but exhibit significant differences from a political, economic, technological and societal standpoint. Whereas China is already the second largest economy in the world by nominal GDP, India is catching up rapidly and is currently the 5th largest economy in the world. However, in some aspects it is still clearly lagging behind. How have the two countries developed over the past decades? What are the differences and similarities? What will be the key success factors for a continuous rise for each of the two countries? How can both countries get along with each other? And lastly, how should Europe and Germany position itself in the new world order of the 21st century?

Clas Neumann is responsible for strategy and operations for the SAP Labs Network (SLN) – SAP’s global network of research and development centers. Under Neumann’s leadership the SLN has grown to 20 R&D centers located in 17 countries worldwide. The largest of those are in Brazil, China, India and the USA. In his second role, as the head of SAP’s fast growth markets. Neumann leads the orchestration of investments and cross-organization strategy to grow SAP’s business in emerging and fast growing markets such as China, the Middle East and Latin America. As a member of SAP’s Senior Executive Team, Neumann has over two decades of experience in fast growth markets, with more than 15 years in India and China, where he was instrumental in SAP’s entry into China. Prior to this, he was President of SAP Labs India and held in addition the responsibility as Senior Vice President, Software Development with engineering teams across the globe. Mr. Neumann is recognized for his business achievements in Asia, evident through his many membership in high-level business circles and associations. He serves as a spokesperson in the Asia Pacific Association of German Industries (APA), a board member in the East Asian Association (OAV). He is board member of the German Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai, China, and was former president of the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce. He has co-authored several books and articles on innovation and business practice in emerging markets. Clas holds a Diploma of the University of Applied Science in Ludwigshafen and a MBA degree from INSEAD, Fontainbleau and Singapore.

For more than 25 years, Dr. Vermeer consults DAX companies, politicians, and organisations on strategic topics in Asia and is frequently an international keynote speaker. Besides that, Manuel has published several literature on China & India and appeared in leading German media. Further, he is co-founder of the East Asia Institute in Ludwigshafen and has taught at various universities around the globe such as University of St. Gallen (HSG), VIT University (India), Shanghai International University, and PFH Göttingen. He is „Senior Advisor Asia“ at Mannheim Business School and Senior Advisor at Taplow Group. Dr. Vermeer is fully proficient in Chinese and formerly acted as interpreter for intergovernmental consultations under former chancellor Helmut Kohl and other German political leaders. The son of an Indian mother and a German father holds a degree in Sinology from University of Heidelberg and a PhD from University of Mainz.
